A Mother's Passion

For me, being outside and having my hands in the dirt is great therapy. It's a wonderful feeling to take a piece of bare ground and turn it into a lush vegetable garden or maybe planting a new flower bed in front of the house, and no matter where we've lived I've always tried to plant something.
This year I didn't get to do much gardening because I injured my knee somehow, but I'm already planning what I want to do come next spring. I have a small front yard I want to plant flowers in, and there's a perfect spot in the back yard for a nice little vegetable garden so I definitely have a lot to look forward to!
I owe my love of gardening to my Mother. I can't ever remember a time in my life when we didn't have veggies growing and flowers everywhere, and over the years she's given me a lot of wonderful advice and ideas for my own gardens and I love her for passing on her passion to me.

This post is part of the "On My Mind" feature over at Down To Earth .

  1. Hi Denise - I can completely relate to your post as my gardening skills and love for my yard come from my childhood. Both my parents are good gardeners with an amazing green thumb. The smell that emanated from the yard when my dad watered in the evenings still comes to me sometimes and takes me back home and to a lot of happy memories.

  2. Hi Denise,

Stopped by from Rhonda's, and I completely agree with you in regards to how relaxing gardening is! We do not have much for a yard, so this year we have 5 potted tomato plants, our first attempt at gardening! We have now picked about 5 tomatoes off the plants and there are many more on the way, it is so rewarding to see them growing!

  3. Claud,
Isn't it amazing how certains smells can take us back to our childhood or other happy places in our lives? Makes me want to be a little kid again sometimes!
    Brenna,
Glad you're getting some yummy tomatoes! I did put out 3 tomato plants this spring, but it's been so, so hot and humid here, that they just didn't do any good. A first for me and I was so disappointed that they did so poorly. But that's ok. There's a lot to do outside and next year will be better!

What a wonderful way to pay homage to your mother and the values she bequeathed you with. Those pink blooms are gorgeous. I wish you many gardening years ahead!

  5. Thank you.
My Mother is a very special and close person in my life, and she's the one person I've wanted to be most like. She's given so much and I hope I can be half the mother to my kids that she's been to me.

  6. Popped over from Rhonda's blog. It's thrilling and uplifting to see plants grow where once there was bare earth. My love of gardening came from my Grandmother and like you Mum I can't remember a time when she didn't have some cutting or other in a pot or plants in the garden.

  8. Hi, I really enjoyed your posts. Our spring had been very wet. Everyones garden got put in late. Then it was hot and if you didn't water regularly the plants didn't do well. I'm working on getting in my cool weather crops.
I love the internet only because I get to meet other people across the world with the same interests as me!

  10. Hi Denise, just popped over from D2E, isn't it lovely and freeing to spend your time in the garden and just be? Enjoy building and spreading the love in your garden. I am hanging out for some warmer weather to arrive to get out in my garden and give it some attention. Regards, Ruth

  12. I really enjoyed your lovely post about how your mother has influenced your love of gardening and how you appreciate her advice. So often gardening can be thought of as a solo activity, but it can also create new friendships or deepen the strong bonds of love that are already present.
